INTERVIEW & PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEORGIA HILMER

NANA (DANCER / FASHION DESIGNER)

QUESTION (GEORGIA):

As a dancer, how do you approach dressing for movement? What kinds of jewelry and clothing do you gravitate towards in your performances? Your necklace features your name, your dancing seems deeply evocative of a complex, rich inner landscape to the viewer — how would you describe the relationship between your public self (the Nana Yaa you present to the world) and the private, intimate emotions you express in movement? There appears to be tension and joy in the many selves you bring to your videos and performances. Does your dancing identity feel synonymous/synchronous with the identity of the outward-facing “Nana Yaa” ?

ANSWER (NANA):

Here goes... funny enough, for some reason I always find it hard to say I'm a dancer. I do movements and they are so random and spur of the moment depending on feeling and space also having no dance background, sometimes I feel slightly embarrassed but I need to get the movements out... When it comes to clothing, it depends... I love being near naked or just a bra and underwear, anything chiffon and loose works so the garment dances with the body but something more structured and restricting also gives me a good challenge as to how to move in new ways. It really depends on the mood. When it comes to jewelry my bracelets stay on as I love the sound of them clanking and my Bing Bang Necklace at the moment is perfect across my collarbone. I think the Nana Yaa performing is free, open, receptive and vulnerable for all to see and its ok, its good, meant to be... The Nana Yaa to the public is less open, slightly timid and does not show her real self, but through the movement it helps me open up more and more and balance myself internally... I guess it’s about learning to let go of the ego as my partner says to me over and over…
